Hrm. Still not 100% happy -- in particular I'd like the post titles to stand out a bit more -- but it was time for a change (though I'm v sad to be losing the lovely Ten/Martha pic [info]biichan made for me). And I'm useless at thinking of words for the headery bits but also unwilling to just put in boring-but-descriptive things, hence the silly and not quite apropos quotes from Classy, but nvm.

(I have made this lovely [info]shinyjenni icon that I have been overusing for a while now into my new default. I do like that.)

Flist stuff

mini destrii is a fish
Just done a bit of a flist-trim. Mostly about time I have to read vs time it takes to read, but the odd bout of paranoia too. Do feel free to PM if you're perturbed in any way. And every day is Defriending Amnesty Day round these parts, in case that needed to be said.

While we're sort of on the topic, I'm conscious that I remain as useless as always at responding to people's posts in any sort of constructive way, because in the absence of telepathy actually working thinking good thoughts at you doesn't really help. *hugs* to all as need them and congratulations to everyone who's had good things and ... oh, well, you get the idea. Pretend I'm better at this than I really am, is the subtext.

I have decided that part of my malaise at the moment is that I'm not doing enough of the sort of fannish stuff I actually enjoy (i.e. writing fic); this is allied to, but separate from, my issue with feeling oppressed by the stuff I haven't done. To combat both of these, I've joined [info]lizbee's [info]666words thing [plug, plug, plug] which is a 40%-of-nano-but-the-words-can-be-on-anything thing, in the hope that it will encourage me to deal with all the stuff I haven't. I will probably do boring word-count-ish posts as I go along, but they would potentially be very spammy so here is a poll (the second option on the first question is fairly pointless, come to think of it; I will only add people who opt in):

Poll #1477633 Filtration poll
This poll is closed.
Open to: Friends, detailed results viewable to: Friends, participants: 19

Do you want to be on the incredibly dull word counts filter?

Yes
19 (100.0%)

No
0 (0.0%)

Obligatory poll option is obligatory.

Ticky box
7 (41.2%)

The avalanche has started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.
16 (94.1%)

ETA: Just remembered the other thing I was going to say. The idea that I'm going to have a month of "This is the Voice of Light City, welcome to your new workday; today is High Productivity Day"s kind of tempts me to sign up for Yuletide after all. Please to be dissuading me. Or suggesting fandoms. I wanna stay away from Britcoms this year if I do do it.

ETA 2: Closed the poll as I've now made the filter. I'm still happy to add people, though; just shout in the comments.

Things I was tempted to spam you about in the last week or so, all in one handy post.

  1. I know it's deeply tedious to LJ about having trouble getting onto LJ, but the servers are significantly less robust since the move, y/y?
  2. I liked the remake of Terry Nation's One Other Good Idea Survivors, myself. minor spoilers for the opener, haven't seen #2 yet )
  3. I have been thinking about the tendency of bad fic to drive out good, which is a pattern I've seen in pretty much every comm I'm familiar with that's even slightly active. Cut for length and a biggish image )
  4. I'm going to cop to this one publicly rather than on my filter because I'm quite proud of it: I wrote TARDIS/Sapphire for the kink meme and here it will be on Teaspoon. (YAY! The 'spoon lets you do colours! I'm so glad I have any sort of self-restraint at all, or all my fics would turn into rainbows or something.)
  5. I am thinking about rewatching S1 of New Who properly all the way through soon to see how it holds up. I liked it at the time for being new Doctor Who on the telly but I have always hated Nine's inability to take the tough choice, which is pretty much his defining character trait as far as I'm concerned and the thing that gets him killed. And also the arbitrary "this person > that person" thing which I had issues with ever since Mickey in Rose. If I do should I post about it, or would it become tedious and be too likely to be hatey? (I may rediscover all the things I enjoyed first time round, or I may notice lots of stuff that prefigures RTD's patterns of fail that weren't obvious as patterns at the time.)
  6. I keep getting in fights on [info]who_anon with people who tell me I'm an emotionless drone who cannot appreciate any modern TV, just because I think the emo in new Who is overdone. cut for length again and spoilers for Spooks and Survivors and all sorts of stuff )
  7. Manufactured American girlpop seems to be having a very good run at the moment. Or my ability to have any discernment whatsoever has jumped straight out of a twentieth-floor window. One of the two. The worst part is that I really like Katy Perry's new song and am now trying to work out whether Kissed A Girl is really objectionable or not.
  8. OTOH: oh, god, James Blunt is so annoying. His songs are bad enough but when he's being interviewed he's so vapid. He's just saying all the standard "I just do my thing and if anyone else likes it that's a bonus" stuff, but he comes across so smug. I should know better than to watch E4 Music when they're not just putting videos on.
  9. Comics! Angel: After the Fall has finally started to make something resembling sense, inasmuch as we've found out what various people are up to. I am bloody well going to have to reread it from the beginning, aren't I? Also, there are lots of good comics coming out tomorrow. I'm a bit grumpy that the release schedules of Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy have aligned, as it means I get all my Cosmic Marvel at once instead of nicely spread out through the month. Also, there is new Blue Beetle! I still can't believe that's been cancelled. Woe. Does anyone know many more we're getting? (My one Blue Beetle icon, let me show you it.)
  10. I am going to catch up on SJA now. Cut because I am talking about a spoiler I know in advance )

October 30th, 2008

Here is a random list of things I want to say, in one big chunk in your flist rather than six separate spammy little posts:

cut for length; it includes my (lack of a) reaction to the Who news, but that's not why I'm cutting, because goddammit It Is Not A Spoiler )

Outside the cut, but still flist-related, I just added a couple of you, and would like to draw your attention (and that of anyone who missed it) to this flocked post about filters.

New layout and stuff! I am all S2y. Still not 100% happy, I might tweak the colours a bit and I'd like to have more empty space around the header (which is lovely and from [info]biichan in the ongoing fabulousness of the Fall Fandom Free For All).

Also, GMSPaintIP, inspired by the twin muses of crappy dialogue and crossover.

I have bought a permanent account.

Worse still, it's entirely for the icon space.

Am within the first 36 hours so only $125 has gone to LJ (I am glad they are doing this as I actually whined over in the [info]news comments during Strikethrough that they ought to be putting their money where their mouth is, but it would be nice to see them doing it with their own money as well as a share of our permaccount money{*}). Am going to donate an equivalent $125 to appropriate organisations. Not quite sure which ones yet.

{*} But then selling permaccounts in the first place is trading off immediate gain against future steady income, innit? So probably they're a bit strapped.

April 28th, 2007

1. I haven't had any comment notification emails in the last 24 hours despite having had comments that should have generated them. I have heard people complain about this before, but it's never happened to me directly - does it just resolve itself or do I need to kick the TARDIS console LJ? And will the backlog appear eventually or are they lost forever?

2. I am trying to be better about using tags. What I would really like is a place where I can look at all the subject lines of my posts with the tags next to them, to see if there are any I've missed out, but the "Manage tags" option doesn't seem to be this, because it's all from a tags->posts perspective. Is there some secret option that does what I want?
