If you want to get all pretentious and mythological about it, this post is like Janus, looking both forwards and backwards. If you're looking for some sort of inducement to actually read it, my Yuletide reveal is buried in here somewhere.

Cut for length, oh my god so much length )

Er, anyway, Happy New Year, everyone! One of the lovely things about 2008 has been how great all my flisty people are, so *hugs* to you and I hope your 2009s are as good as you made my 2008. If that makes any sense.

I might do that icon meme in a minute, if I can be bothered to pinch someone's HTML.

Oh Aaron no

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I liked Aaron Sorkin a lot more before Studio 60 made his issues a lot more obvious and out in the open than they needed to be. Don't get me wrong: when he's good, he's very very good, but when he's bad ...

My latest West Wing rewatch has reached 3x22, Posse Comitatus )

{*} I am catching up with pre-Geoff-Johns-reboot Green Lantern a bit and finally read Kyle's intro story the other day, so I have first hand experience of the template for this one. I did not realise quite how true it was, because they really, really sell you on Alex (in a slightly cheesecakey way, admittedly, but then it was the '90s: Superman turns up at one point with the most outrageous un-Superman-like haircut I have ever seen) and she exists all along for the purposes of being stuffed in there so he can be emo (but then forget his emo while Alan Scott gives him an infodump, because when your girlfriend's just been killed of course you want to know the ins and outs of the history of the GLC, of course you do).

...

Sorry, I am in a grouchy mood and it would be more constructive to do stuff to fix the sources of the grouchiness than redirect it at fictional things. So I shall go and do that. I think there is interesting meta to be made of the fact that most of the recent TV that by general consensus is really good tends to have a slightly megalomaniac auteur at the helm and maybe the fact that their issues get put front and centre like it or not is the price we pay for having something that has any sort of consistent vision in the face of networks and such regressing everything to the what-worked-before mean. But I am not the one to write it, and if I did it would end up being a very weak defence of RTD more than anything else.

So, today I discovered you can just about sing the Green Lantern oath (and thus all the other ones patterned on it) to O Tannenbaum. It doesn't work hugely well (the stern third line comes out far too jolly), but it pleases me excessively.

Apparently you have the wankiness of Supernatural fandom to thank for this, idk the details )

Look, I don't think you'll find I promised it would be coherent or anything.

There are many others I could have done, like pretty much all the other companions from DW, or most of the Buffy people, or Mrs Peel, or CJ, or Sophia the Grel because I am on a massive Jacqueline Rayner kick at the moment and I like being deliberately obscure. Because really despite my general grumpiness I am very easily pleased and love everyone. But I think that will do for now.

  1. A few months back talking about Checkmate, I said "For some reason I have a feeling that if I do get more interested in DC it's going to be the whole Green Lantern thing that excites me the most." And OMG I was totally right. Cut for being an overlong paragraph composed entirely of gushing run-on sentences and also for spoilers all the way up to Sinestro Corps War #8 ) In short: the Green Lantern Corps is 3600 buddy cop movies. Going on simultaneously. In spaaaaace. And thus utterly awesome.
  2. Also, it makes me have strange crackfic thoughts where the Pete-verse is an AU of the DCU as well as of the Whoniverse, where Abin Sur never crashlanded on Earth and so no Earth people became Green Lanterns. The Guardians exist and are fulfilling the Time Lordy role, but the whole Green Lantern set up is as per the beginning of the Silver Age because all the stuff that changed is a result of those pesky Earthlings, really. And anyway, a ring finds post-Doomsday Rose and she kicks ass and takes names as GL of Sector 2814 but when Daleks appear from somewhere lame and implausible they are yellow enough for the ring not to work, ZOMG.
  3. [info]neadods wrote clever things about where SJA fits into the Whoniverse race thing that made me have the following thinks: a) Kelsey and Clyde are both very close to stereotypes of black schoolchildren, oh dear. b) Apparently, if you aliens put all of humanity in a blender create an archetypal human, you end up with a geeky white boy. You can see the appeal to fandom, I think. I really think now that the production team have just got a huge side order of clueless. 'Cos, I mean, I know I'm clueless and I can see this stuff. Apparently there is all shock noes-we-is-not-racist-why-would-anyone-think-that stuff in a DWM interview, so I am clearly going to have to go buy it to find out what was said, and that annoys me 'cos I unfairly associate DWM with the irritating conservative end of fandom.
  4. I accidentally-on-purpose read a Torchwood spoiler at freemaagyeman.com. And so I cut. )
  5. Speaking of freemaagyeman.com, are there any Freema Agyeman worshipping sections of the Internet that use the name "Sweet FA"? 'Cos if not, there totally should be.
  6. That "write a character writing fanfic" meme is incredibly cool. If the bar wasn't already set intimidatingly high I would totally write Wesley britpicking Gunn's Mickey/Jake, but it is so I won't.
  7. For some reason, my masochistic streak is making me read fics on Teaspoon that trigger my "Avoid! Avoid!" sense. This is very silly, because my "Avoid! Avoid!" sense is well honed and they are very bad fics indeed. Also, I looked at my statistics on there for the fifteenth time this week 'cos I am weirdly obsessed even though I haven't uploaded anything there in months out of mild curiosity and OMG the pr0n gets so many more reads than the gen. But far fewer reviews. WHY HALO THAR FANDOM'S COLLECTIVE SENSE OF SHAME.
  8. Apparently there is going to be an Angel S6 comic. This is a bad idea. The whole point of Not Fade Away IMO is that they are all doomed doomed doomed and fighting on anyway. I do not want to see them survive. Sorry. The Buffy S8 comic is great, though, even if it is now set in the Britain that only exists in Americans' heads.
