LOL
I think that the existence of this hymn conclusively proves that Ace's dialogue is entirely realistic there was at least one other person in the late '80s/early '90s apart from Ian Briggs who thought that teenagers talked that way.

(You're probably not supposed to call that sort of rubbish a hymn. I don't care.)

ETA: If you thought the words were bad just by themselves, check out this YouTube rendition.

The general trend with these is that my opinion regresses to the mean somewhat, and this one's no exception )

So, er, I have gone off it a bit on balance, but I still basically like the things I liked first time round. It's such a shame, it'd be a neat little SF-as-satire ep without that huge element of awfulness embedded in it.

This one is my two cents on the warnings thing, and you should probably skip it )

The other post is going to be happy and squeeful and forward-looking, really honestly truly. But probably won't be for a bit, because I am hoping to use it to plug my [info]tardis_bigbang fic when it goes live.

Twice, in fact, for the [info]henriettastreet ficathon:

  • Origin Stories which is about Iris's bus.
  • Mixed Signals which is me writing down a wodge of mah Time War fanon for the first time ever and shoving Compassion into the middle of it, on account of she is awesome.

(The rest of the ficathon is here and you should totes read it, just like I'm planning to now that I can without feeling guilty.)

GOOD FACT: Talk Like A Grel Day is the best idea ever.
BAD FACT: I only just found out about it with two hours to go.
ADDITIONAL FACT: I routinely do it without needing prompting, at least in my head.

Idiots. But then it's Fox, so we kind of knew that already. Still, at least I have S1 to go back and watch for the first time for me. Will probably wait for the combo DVD box set in September.

I am torn between wanting the writers to write a big long "here is what was coming next, you guys" thing like that Andromeda guy did with his alt-finale or whatever it was, or being allowed to speculate madly forevermore. Probably they were making it all up as they went along and didn't have anything planned out at this stage, so the former option isn't really available anyway. I do feel kinda tempted to write the most out-there "how I would end it" fic possible that still manages to fit the themes and such. I had a plot for one, but I discarded it when I realised that it was just all the stuff that got into my brain at an early age (specifically Who and Hitchhikers) trying to write itself all over another universe entirely. I might still do it all the same, I dunno.

I got around to watching the last episode of S2 of Terminator over the weekend. (It was my reward I gave myself for slogging through the first half of my giant pile of tedious work.)

Short version: OMG, I cannot believe there is even the slightest risk of this show being cancelled. It's so awesome. I really haven't had this experience of being this invested in a US show at the same time as its fate is genuinely in the balance before. The feeling of powerlessness isn't much fun, actually.

The long version under the cut has spoilers for pretty much everything Terminator-ish ever, including SCC 2x22; it is mostly about time travel and a bit about Obvious Religious Imagery, because those are what I'm qualified to talk about as a Doctor Who fan.

I'm putting my meta tag on this, but it's more of a ramble based on the last ep and much of it is far too obvious to qualify )

So in conclusion: I basically have no bloody clue what they're going to do next. And I want to know. So pls don't cancel this show, Fox? Kthxbai.

I haven't been completely obsessed with [info]tardis_bigbang lately, I've also managed to produce something for [info]lgbtfest too. It is 3000 words on the prompt "Romana and Ace after the Time War" and can be found here.

It is quite Gallifrey-audio-orientated. Is there a comm for those I ought to be posting it to, but am clueless of/joined and forgot I ever had?

Which of the Temporal Powers in the Gallifrey audios are the creepy ones who use other people's bodies? I have a feeling it's the Monans? Sorry for asking such an inane question, but my CDs are all boxed up at the moment and the usual online references don't go into enough depth about them (that I've seen) for me to be sure.

I have one of those dreamwidth thingies now, but I don't envisage using it that much unless/until LJ goes completely unusable. Same username as here.

So there has been quite a lot of fannish-type telly while I've been semi-away. I am going to pretend that you care what I thought of it.

New Doctor Who! )

New Red Dwarf! )

New Ashes to Ashes! )

Terminator 2 was on at the same time as Ashes to Ashes, so I taped it even though I have it on proper bought-in-a-shop VHS somewhere. The little bit I did flick to after A2A was over completely messed up my Cunning Theories about how time travel works in SCC, though. Argh. (I have also spoiled myself ever-so-slightly for 2x22 [only Wikipedia-episode-list-summary level, accidentally], which spoilers suggest I am even wrongerer.)

  1. This poor boy falling into a vat of caustic soda is obviously a terrible, terrible thing, and I hope he recovers well and the damage to his eyes in particular isn't too bad. BUT OMG, BBC AND OTHER REPUTABLE NEWS ORGANISATIONS, IS THERE NO ONE IN YOUR NEWSROOMS WHO REMEMBERS THEIR Y7 SCIENCE LESSONS? Please, please, please stop calling it "acid". Sodium hydroxide is a strong alkali, it's the exact bloody opposite. Fail. [I'm sure you can insert a Two Cultures rant for me here, I can't be bothered to do it myself any more.]
  2. SCC has gone from good to amazing over the last month or so (we'up to 2x20 on Virgin 1 now, but I had to tape that one and haven't seen it yet; the ones that particularly impressed me were the two-parter 2x18/2x19). It is engaging the speculate-y bit of my brain in ways that haven't been stimulated for a good long while (I think the last thing that got me this excited was the City of the Saved in Faction Paradox). Predictably enough it is the time travel that I am most excited by, though the AI stuff is also rather splendid. I am probably going to write meta, but I will wait 'til the series is over so as it can be coherent. (I can't believe it's potentially not being renewed; there is clearly something wrong with the world. I don't think I've been invested enough in a US series close enough to its original screening to be worried about it being picked up for ... well, ever, actually, 'cos it's only recently that shows have made it across the Atlantic quickly enough for it not to be a done deal by the time we saw it.)
  3. [info]henriettastreet ficathon deadline is extended until the 22nd, as that's when I'm going to be able to sort out the assignments. Pretty please, sign up/plug? (I remain too lazy.)
  4. I am still posting from hotspots. Moving house has gone very well overall, but I remain essentially offline because BT didn't bother to do anything about activating it for over a week and the process cannot be accelerated or something (they've given me dial up to compensate but it is painful so I am only using it for essentials; the broadband is meant to be coming Tues/Weds of next week now). It is faily, and they have gone way down in my estimation. But nvm. However, I am going to have to give up on trying to catch up on my flist, so feel free to use this post as a link dump if there's anything I've missed you think I should look at.
  5. This [info]tardis_bigbang fic is completely kicking my ass, and now looks likely to end up somewhere north of 30-40k. Which is ridiculous given the sort of length I normally write, and I'm clearly not going to have it finished for the first deadline, but I should have the minimum 15k (probably the beginning and the end, and a lot of "and then this happens, and this happens, and this happens" in the middle). I've pulled out of [info]thelittlebang because there was no way I was going to manage that as well, which is sad.
  6. The [info]tardis_gen fic I got, "Things Best Forgotten", is a lovely Anji-centric EDA piece and very clever, with several layers to it. You should all go read it.

Apparently the end of American Life on Mars is drastically different somehow to the British version? Only I cannot find anyone actually saying what it was in ways I can understand. I would quite like to know, but I basically have no intention of ever watching it. Can anyone take two seconds to explain it to a bear of very little brain such as myself? Thx.

(With luck, there will be spoilers in the comments.)

You might be able to tell that as well as The Internet, I have spent today catching up on comics. I can't find anyone talking about this in the places I might have expected to on LJ, but maybe I'm just being faily at looking. I'm pleased, though, because IDW have finally got done something right with the Who franchise! Hurrah!

The rest of this is very spoilery )

But anyway, good stuff, yes. I hope the other five IDW one-shots are of a similar standard.

Driveby hospot post is driveby:

The lettercol of Buffy #24, about the Satsu thing? NOT ENOUGH STABBITY IN THE WORLD. Who knew Buffy fandom of all places was so full of homophobia? (Why yes, I am repressing my memories of lurking atbvs, thank you.) And the people who claim there was no buildup clearly weren't paying the slightest bit of attention. LOLS at them printing the disappointed Buffy/Xander shipper at the end, though. (Incidentally, my rewatch has reached early S2 -- oh, evil Spike, you are rather great, as are you, Xander/Cordy UST -- and I suddenly realised that Some Assembly Required, which I had always thought of as decent but disposable filler, contains why I fell in love with the show in miniature. There's a scene there where Buffy, Willow and Xander discuss unrequited love and the history of their little triangle is all wonderfully there in the acting and OH. With my susceptibility to stories about crushes I was always going to go for them, especially as none of it stops them caring about each other or doing the right thing given the whole saving-the-world malarkey [with a few eminently believable exceptions]. Anyway, I still love Buffy, is the point, and Buffy/Satsu goes straight to the heart of what I love most about it.)

OTOH, Guardians of the Galaxy #12 spoilers )

Gakked from [info]lizbee and [info]astrogirl2. (Incidentally, I very much approve of this meme, as I have felt for a while that Who fandom is needlessly, even counterproductively, cagey about Teaspoon stats.)

Open up your "Manage Stories" page on Teaspoon and unfold all the chapters. For the purposes of this meme, disregard first chapters of multichapter fics. [Teaspoon counts any hits on the TOC as a hit on the first chapter.]

results under the cut )

I need to get a this-is-me-being-nerdy-and-obsessing-over-stats icon, I think.

Anyway, my internets are almost inevitably about to switch themselves off; I'm already on borrowed time, the phone line has died on schedule but weirdly the broadband still works. I will see you all from another house. (*hugs* to all who feel the need for them.)

Irrelevant ETA: Is it something like a sign of the downturn that there seems to be a lot more spam nowadays trying to sell me email address lists so I can be a spammer myself? Hopefully they will all eat each other to death.

  1. Phew, [info]tardis_gen fic is in.
  2. I am a bit ashamed that I went all non-anon at someone the very first time someone said anything even mildly negative about me on the meme. But I was in that discussion already, in a fairly obvious anon type way, so I shan't feel too bad about it.
  3. On the positive-engagement-with-fandom front to balance out, ficathon signups at [info]henriettastreet are now open. *looks at various flist types* Go on, you know you want to ...

spoiler cut )

Also, I don't think Who's going to win a Hugo this year. The general consensus seems to be that Turn Left is a mediocre dystopic AU with far too much racefail (which I wouldn't disagree with objectively, but I have NO quality standards when it comes to dystopic AUs, so I love those elements of it anyway -- q.v. the way every future the X-Men ever visit is a variant on Days of Future Past and I love it every time; the racefail is hideous, though). The S4 Moffat eps aren't as good as his previous winners, and meanwhile BSG and Lost are both in their final seasons which might gee up their fanbases and everybody seems to have loved Dr Horrible, apart from the people who didn't. It is an open field, it seems to me.
